Red Eye Photography – Wildlife Channel

Welcome to Red Eye Photography, I’m Grant, an amateur photographer looking to improve my skills and find better ways to capture the birds and animals I love around the UK.

My interest in wildlife began way back when I was around 9 (1970), I loved watching Richard Attenborough wildlife documentary from around the world and closer to home, Simon King and his dad going to UK locations to observe birds and animals.

My local park (Sefton Park in Wavertree, Liverpool) did have some wildlife, the most exotic birds where kept in an Victorian Avery also there was an Victorian hot house which was getting rather run down but it was still a fantastic place to go and enjoy the intense smells of a warn tropical ish climate. I spent my time taking photos with my dad’s old Zenith camera and a 50mm lens.

A trip on the train to Freshfield near Formby would be rewarded with the wonders of the rare red squirrel. Today it is still one of the few places to see Red Squirrels in the UK.

A few of my friends where into photography and we all began to learn about developing our own black and white films and prints in our converted bathrooms, those where the days when one bin liner was enough to stop any light coming in thru the window!

Later on with the progress of digital I decided to change from my old faithful Canon AE1 to the Nikon D200, yes, Canon had a range of digital cameras but all being menu driven and, at the time, I preferred good old fashioned dials. Later I then upgraded to the D300 and wanted to improve my general wildlife photography.

I began to critique my images, discovering the gulf between my images and those taken of the same birds/animals displayed in websites, books and magazines taken by professional photographers.

After a gap of twenty years I have decided to take up my old passion again! This is my continuing journey… Striving for better wildlife images!
